Finding the right Solution…

Don’t forget to question your toolchain! | Chuq Von Rospach, Photographer and Author:

In this case, building everything in WordPress massively simplifies the project. I think. I’m off to find out for sure, but it looks like a pretty simple hack now, at least in concept. That’s why it’s always good to both understand and question your assumptions — and one of the big ones in any geek project are the tools, because they end up defining a lot of decisions throughout the project. Make sure you haven’t taken assumptions or made choices that limit your options or push you down the wrong paths…

An evening of experimentation, and… Yes, I do think this is going to work out fine! Google ChromeScreenSnapz001

I’m using one wordpress plugin (that enables PHP in a page), and some quick PHP geeking. None of that has been given any kind of semantic or styling, but the structure came together amazingly fast. Total amount of PHP to generate this is under 50 lines. It will (not surprisingly) require a bit of data cleanup, and to set up the topics, I’ll need to go back to old articles and do some tagging, but that’s a good idea, anyway.

It does mean that I can’t use tags on blog entries that aren’t part of “For your Consideration” as long as it shares the blog, but that’s not bad. Or I can rethink that assumption and roll some of this stuff out to the entire blog instead. Will have to think about that. I’ve been considering redoing my category pages, and this shows me an approach to replacing those pages that doesn’t require opening up the hood on the theme — this work is 100% theme neutral, which I didn’t expect to happen.

Now for some semantical design, and some theming, and then to clean up the existing data…

Not bad!
